CALL FOR DEBATE
This is an open call for debate about a “BIG SCANDALE” in cartoon world undergoing since
31st January 2010 when it was first discovered, and was surfaced by
the
“Don Quichotte Magazine” in
their web site with sound proofs.
The matter is purely one which concerns the art world
in general and the CARTOON world in
specific.
From the very first moment that this nasty incident
was discovered, it has been started to be discussed
in the web pages and
facebook and the parts involved have been called to comment about it.
Unfortunately, since 4 days, the discussion platform
is being maintained in TURKISH
language
only while the assailant is a TURKISH
cartoonist and the injured party is not, a BRAZILIAN cartoonist.
Moreover, the matter is considered to be an extremely
important one to be handled for a debate
in international field of cartoon
because it is more than a case between two persons any more.
HEREBY, it has been decided, with the lead of “Don Quichotte Magazine”; to transfer it
to the
world cartoon community; eventually this note of “CALL FOR DEBATE” has been drafted.
Dear Cartoonists of the world,
Find below the brief story of the above mentioned case
in a most comprehensible way as possible:

Mr.
ALI SUR is a known cartoonist in Turkey ( to be called as ALI from now on).
·
Mr.
Luiz Carlos Fernandes is a very famous Brazilian
cartoonist ( to be called as LUIZ from
now on).
·
ALI
and LUIZ know each other before this
incident from some international activities of cartoon.
·
ALI
has an account in www.toonpool.com web
site to exhibit his works to public.
·
LUIZ has a personal facebook page
where he also exhibits his works.
·
LUIZ
has created a portrait caricature of Fidel Castro, the
legendary leader of Cuba,
and exhibited this fine work in his facebook page.

ALI,
in his TOONPOOL account page, has also exhibited the very same portrait of
Fidel Castro.

). After the disclosure of the incident,
ALI has immediately cleared this page
from his account but the captured picture of the page stays in DQ magazine.

The simple difference is that the
portrait which was in ALI’s Toonpool account has no signature
on it while the
one in LUIZ’s facebook page the signature of LUIZ is placed.
·
Captured pictures of these two pages
have been published in DQ Magazine
on 31st January 2010
with the title of “BIG
SCANDALE”. Thus the important debate started.
NOW;
1-The signature was deliberately
erased from the TOONPOOL account of ALI.
2- Deleting the related page
immediately from his account is an absolute proof of RED HAND caught case.
3- Toonpool account of ALI has some
comments by the viewers and the replies of ALI himself in return.
These
sentences can be seen in “Doc No.2 link”
. Because some of the comments are in Turkish language
given by Turkish
cartoonist friends of ALI, we have to give here their translations. Important
ones are:
Mr.Oguz Gürel ( a well known Turkish cartoonist)
writes :
( Your lines
reach to such a degree that the portrait has become somehow monumental.
As if
to run over from the paper… Congratulations ALI.. Very beautiful….)
ALI replies :
( In fact dear Oguz, it does not resemble
entirely. It Resembles my father more.
I
will send you his picture from facebook and look yourself. The nickname of the
deceased was “Castro”
in the neighborhood . If you look carefully, you will see
that it does not resemble much but I had drawn it anyhow.
This year, I am
obsessed about the shadow work. I don’t like colored work.
I have been working portrait caricature for
three months. I like the shadow and alike much. Thanks for your comments )
Some others
viewers writes comments like “excellent, super,
great work, good work,
very good work, very impressive, superb and nice
one” , artists like Marian
Avramescu,
Lucido, Gero, Nicoleta Ionescu. In reply to all at once he says:
“THANK YOU VERY MUCH” taking all the
credit on himself.
Before the
break of the scandal, one viewer named Ismail Dogan, another Turkish cartoonist
comments saying :
“GOOD DRAWING…
FORGOTTEN YOUR SIGNATURE”
Then, at the
point of break of the SCANDALE, a viewer named Cristina comments :
“have you read don quichotte today ? It’s
your work plagiarism ??”

He tries to
reply to this comment in a broken English with a difficult to understand sentences
but surely a confession of the wrong act.
And HALF AN
HOUR LATER, this page was deleted from his account in toonpool.
4- Not long after the announcement of
this SCANDALE, many Turkish cartoonists start sending
their comments to both DQ
Magazine and the new FACEBOOK group named
“DQ
World Cartoonists Group” at : http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=216784392990
ALI starts cursing
the people commenting against him by e-mails in a very bad manner and in slang
language.
Not a single Turkish cartoonist sends any positive comment or even a
word to support him in this debate.
LUIZ has been reached by mails asking about his opinion
about the case.
He replies back to DQ Magazine and it was published there.
He
shows a real gentleman attitude saying that he is not hurt that ALI used his
work in his toonpool page.
But, he adds that it is never acceptable that an
artist’s work is to be used without giving credit to the creator,
even worse by
erasing his signature. Reply of LUIZ is
published in its original text of English and its translation
to Turkish in DQ
Magazine web pages.
Dear Cartoonists of the world,
This act of Mr.ALI SUR is considered anonymously by all the currently
commenting
Turkish cartoonists as “UNACCEPTABLE”. However, it is not possible
to name it.
Till now, we have the definition of SIMILAR cartoons.
We have the PLAGIARISM act which is worse.
Unfortunately, there is no current name for this act.
Moreover, is there any sanction to be taken against the actor ?.
Are there any measures to be taken to prevent
the re-occurrence of it anywhere again ?.
Please remember that it may hurt any of us if we let it go forgotten.

Asagida, bana gelen maillerden bir ornek goreceksiniz, tehditvari bir ornek
!.. Bu maille, korkup yazilarima devam edemeyecegimi dusunen varsa; bu mail
benim icin "devede pire kalir". Ben, 2006 subatinda, bir ay olumle tehdit
edildim.Kendi vatanimda, calismalarim Nisantasi Tevfik İhtiyar Sanat
Galerisi duvarlarindan Israilin istegi (emri) uzerine indirildi,
ısrail konsoloslugunda sorgudan gectim !..
Ali bey gibi hava atabilecegim 78 odulumyok,
ama yuzumu kizartici bir olayim da yok.
Haksizliga karsi,mermilere karsi, kalemimi cektigim icin aldigim
uyarilar,tehditler belgelerle duruyor...
Ilk yazimda da ikincide de anlayan derdimi zaten anlamistir, benim
açiimdan Ali bey bu olayda yardimci oyuncudur,
kamera olayi onun uzeriden bize tasir.
Ali bey babasina hakaret ettigimi soyluyor! Babaniza Castro diyen ilk ben
degilim, sizsiniz! Babama mahalleli Castro derdi diyorsunuz ! Esas oglan
karikatur sanati ve sanatcidir.Bu olayin olusumunun altindaki gercek sorun
nedir( Juriler,dernekler,uluslar arasi paylasim,cıkar iliskileri,
ayrimcilik, bosvermislik v.b...)
Bunlar yazilip cizilirken dikkatimi ceken asil konu, T.C. Karikaturculer
Dernegi'nden hala bir satir yazi gorememis olmam !.. Belki simdi Ali bey
gibi birileride benim icin kim bu adam hangi cesaretle boyle yaziyor
diyebilir. Dernekteki buyuklerim beni dernek toplantilarinda gormek istemeye
bilir, hic onemli degil zaten hic ic acici bir durumda olmadigimizi
camiadaki herkes biliyor.Sanatci haklari nerede, bu haklarin ne oldugunu kacimiz biliyor?
BASBAKANI YORMAYALIM,
HAYDI BIRBIRIMIZE DAVA USTUNE DAVA ACALIM,
elestiri yasak, yazmak yasak,cizmek yasak !..
Madem karikatur evrensel karikaturist evrensel; Don Quichotte'a yazsan
Erdoganci, dernek sitesine yazsan dernekci, saat kulesine yazsa izmirci
vb..olmakla ayırt ediliyor kendini bilmez bazı sahislar tarafindan
dislaniyorsun!.. Madem evrenseliz, olay sadece Ali Sur'u yoketmek degil, bu
olaylarin onune gecmek olmamalimi ?!...
Bu kadar cizer bunu mu tartismaliydi yoksa su an kalbimiz, beynimiz,
kalemlerimiz, Ankara'da, Istanbul'da eylemde mi olmaliydi.Asil tartisilmasi
gereken bu degilmiydi.Elestirmek ve elestirilmek cizerin hamurunda vardir,
bunu inkar etmek kacmak veya buna ofkelenmek Ali beye birsey
kazandirmayacak, aksine kuculecek,heyecanini bastiramayip hata yapan amator
gibi davraniyor.Kendisi Fernandes yakin arkadasim diyor, yakin arkadasi
Fernandes ise Surnandes icin " Toyluguna Veriyorum" diyor. Bizde toyluguna
veriyoruz..Bu konulara tepkisiz kalan herkesi, toyluguna veriyoruz:))
